What are you currently paying for Medicare? Many beneficiaries don’t realize they may be able to lower their monthly costs by comparing Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) plans. Medigap helps cover out-of-pocket expenses such as deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance.
If you already have a Medigap policy—or are looking for a new one—a licensed agent can provide free Medicare Supplement quotes and help you evaluate the plans available in your area.
How Medicare Works
- Part A: Hospital insurance (inpatient stays, hospice, skilled nursing)
- Part B: Medical insurance (doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, DME)
- Part C: Medicare Advantage, an alternative to Original Medicare offered by private insurers
- Part D: Prescription drug coverage (private, optional)
Original Medicare = Part A + Part B. Many people add Part C, Part D, or a Medigap plan for additional coverage.
Average Costs in 2025
- Medicare Part A: $0 premium if you or your spouse worked 40 quarters; up to $505/month if not.
- Medicare Part B: Standard premium $174.70/month. Higher-income enrollees pay more based on IRMAA.
- Medicare Advantage (Part C): Average premium $13.24/month (many plans as low as $0).
- Medicare Part D: Average premium $55.50/month (varies by formulary and drug tiers).
- Medigap: Average premium $130.58/month, depending on state, age, and plan letter.
How Medigap Pricing Works
Medigap premiums are set by private insurers using three pricing models:
- Community-rated: Same price for all enrollees, regardless of age.
- Issue-age-rated: Based on age when you first buy; does not increase as you age.
- Attained-age-rated: Based on current age; increases over time (most common).
When to Enroll in Medigap
The best time to buy is during your Medigap Open Enrollment Period—the 6 months after you turn 65 and enroll in Part B. During this time, you have guaranteed issue rights: insurers cannot deny you or charge more due to health conditions. Outside this period, medical underwriting may apply.
Why Compare Medigap Quotes?
Medigap plans are standardized by the government—Plan G benefits are the same no matter which insurer you choose. The difference is the premium you pay. Comparing quotes ensures you don’t overpay for identical coverage.
Benefits offered by each Medigap plan
Compare the benefits of each lettered plan to help you find one that meets your needs now and in the future. You might not be able to switch Medigap policies later.
