Medigap Plan G is the most popular Medicare Supplement Insurance plan in 2025, covering nearly all gaps in Original Medicare. It is now the most comprehensive plan available to new beneficiaries, with about 39% of enrollees choosing Plan G.
Why Plan G Is So Popular
Plan G covers everything that Plan F does except for the Medicare Part B deductible. Since Plan F is no longer available to people who became Medicare-eligible on or after January 1, 2020, Plan G has become the default choice for those seeking the broadest coverage.
The Part B deductible is $257 in 2025. If Plan G’s premium is at least $21.50 less per month than Plan F, you could save money by choosing Plan G.
What Does Plan G Cover?
Plan G pays for all standardized Medigap benefits except the Part B deductible:
- Medicare Part A coinsurance and hospital costs (up to 365 additional days after Medicare benefits end)
- Medicare Part B coinsurance or copayment
- First 3 pints of blood
- Part A hospice care coinsurance/copayment
- Skilled nursing facility coinsurance ($209.50 per day in 2025 for days 21–100, covered in full)
- Medicare Part A deductible ($1,632 in 2025)
- Medicare Part B excess charges
- Foreign travel emergency care – up to 80% after a $250 deductible
What Plan G does not cover: The Medicare Part B deductible ($257 in 2025).
Plan G in Action
With Plan G, your only annual out-of-pocket Medicare cost is the Part B deductible. After you pay this, the plan covers all remaining deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments. That means predictable costs and strong protection against unexpected bills.
High-Deductible Plan G
There are two versions of Plan G: standard and high-deductible.
- Standard Plan G: Covers all benefits immediately after you meet the Part B deductible.
- High-Deductible Plan G: Requires you to meet a $2,870 deductible in 2025 before coverage begins, in exchange for much lower monthly premiums.
Plan G vs. Other Medigap Plans
Plan G offers more protection than most other Medigap plans, but here’s how it compares:
- Plan F: Includes the Part B deductible, but only available to those eligible before 2020.
- Plan C: Similar to Plan F but does not cover excess charges. Also closed to new beneficiaries after 2020.
- Plan N: Lower premiums than Plan G, but requires copays for some office and ER visits and does not cover excess charges.
Average Costs for Plan G
In 2025, the average monthly premium for standard Plan G was $156.58, or about $1,879 annually. Premiums vary by age, gender, tobacco use, pricing model, and location. High-deductible Plan G averaged about $58 per month.
When to Enroll
The best time to enroll is during your Medigap Open Enrollment Period. This 6-month period begins when you are 65 and enrolled in Medicare Part B. During this time, insurers cannot deny coverage or raise premiums because of health.
Outside of this period, you may face medical underwriting unless you qualify for a guaranteed issue right.
