Medigap Plan F Benefits & Costs 2025

Steven Hayes

Medigap Plan F is one of the ten standardized Medicare Supplement Insurance options available in most Medigap Plan F is the most comprehensive Medicare Supplement Insurance plan available. It covers all 9 standardized Medigap benefits, making it the broadest option. As of 2025, about 36% of Medigap beneficiaries are enrolled in Plan F.

Important Eligibility Note

Plan F is not available to people who became eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020. If you qualified for Medicare before that date, you may still enroll if Plan F is offered in your area. Current enrollees are allowed to keep their coverage.

What Does Plan F Cover?

Plan F is the only Medigap plan that covers every standardized benefit:

High-Deductible Plan F

There are two versions of Plan F: standard and high-deductible.

  • Standard Plan F: Covers all 9 benefits from the start.
  • High-Deductible Plan F: Requires you to pay a $2,870 deductible in 2025 before benefits begin, in exchange for lower monthly premiums.

How Plan F Reduces Your Costs

With Plan F, nearly all out-of-pocket Medicare costs are eliminated.

  • Hospital stays longer than 60 days — fully covered
  • Doctor visits and outpatient care — 20% coinsurance covered in full
  • Blood transfusions — first 3 pints covered
  • Hospice prescriptions ($5 each) and respite care (5% coinsurance) — covered in full
  • Skilled nursing care coinsurance ($209.50 per day in 2025 after day 20) — covered in full
  • Part A and Part B deductibles — covered in full
  • Part B excess charges — covered in full if you see a provider who bills above Medicare’s approved amount
  • Foreign travel emergency — 80% of costs covered (limits apply)

Plan F vs. Other Medigap Plans

Plan F is the most extensive Medigap plan, but not always the best value.

  • Plan G: Identical to Plan F except it does not cover the Part B deductible ($257 in 2025). If Plan G’s monthly premium is at least $21.50 less than Plan F, you may save money with Plan G.
  • Plan C: Covers everything Plan F does except excess charges. If you only use Medicare-assignment providers, excess charges may not matter, making Plan C a lower-cost alternative (for those eligible before 2020).
  • Plan N: Covers many of the same benefits, but you pay small copays and it excludes the Part B deductible and excess charges.

Average Costs for Plan F

In 2025, the average monthly premium for standard Plan F was $227.83. The high-deductible Plan F averaged $82.50 per month. Actual costs vary by age, gender, smoking status, and location.

When to Enroll

The best time to enroll is during your Medigap Open Enrollment Period. This 6-month window begins when you are at least 65 and enrolled in Medicare Part B. During this time, insurers cannot deny you coverage or raise rates due to your health.

Outside of this window, you may face medical underwriting unless you qualify for a guaranteed issue right.
