Medigap Open Enrollment Period (OEP)
The Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) Open Enrollment Period lasts six months. This window begins when both of the following are true:
- You are age 65 or older
- You are enrolled in Medicare Part B
Unlike the annual Medicare Open Enrollment Period (Oct. 15 – Dec. 7), you only have one Medigap OEP. If you enroll in Part B before turning 65, your OEP starts the month you turn 65. If you delay Part B, your OEP begins the month you sign up.
Why Your OEP Matters
During your six-month OEP, you have important consumer protections. Insurance companies cannot deny you a Medigap policy or charge higher premiums due to health issues. You can buy any Medigap plan sold in your state at the same price as someone in good health. Medical underwriting is not allowed during this time.
If you apply after your OEP ends, insurance companies typically have the right to use medical underwriting. This means they can deny your application or charge more based on your health history.
Special Considerations for Those Under 65
If you qualify for Medicare before 65 due to a disability or medical condition, your Medigap rights may be different. Federal law does not require insurers to sell Medigap policies to those under 65. Some states offer additional protections, but rules vary. Check your state’s Medigap guide for details.
What Happens if You Miss OEP?
Once your initial six-month window closes, your options are more limited. You may face higher premiums, coverage denials, or waiting periods. Certain states and circumstances may provide additional enrollment rights, but these vary.
