Medigap Plan N Benefits & Costs 2025

Mark Reynolds

MedicMedigap Plan N is one of the most popular Medicare Supplement Insurance options, covering 7 of the 9 standardized Medigap benefits. It balances solid coverage with lower monthly premiums, making it the third most common plan after Plan G and Plan F.

What Makes Plan N Different?

Plan N covers most out-of-pocket costs from Original Medicare, but requires small copays in certain situations. You may pay up to $20 for some office visits and up to $50 for emergency room visits that don’t result in admission. These trade-offs often make Plan N more affordable than Plans F or G.

What Does Plan N Cover?

Plan N helps reduce or eliminate many costs that Medicare Parts A and B leave behind:

  • Medicare Part A coinsurance and hospital costs (up to 365 extra days after Medicare benefits end)
  • Medicare Part B coinsurance/copayments (except for the small office and ER visit copays noted above)
  • First 3 pints of blood
  • Part A hospice care coinsurance/copayment
  • Skilled nursing facility coinsurance ($209.50 per day in 2025 for days 21–100)
  • Medicare Part A deductible ($1,632 in 2025, covered in full each benefit period)
  • Foreign travel emergency care – up to 80% after a $250 deductible

What Plan N does not cover:

  • Medicare Part B deductible ($257 in 2025)
  • Medicare Part B excess charges (up to 15% more if a provider does not accept Medicare assignment)

Plan N in Action

Plan N provides broad coverage at a lower monthly premium than Plan G or Plan F. For example:

  • If you see your doctor, you may pay up to a $20 copay, but most other Part B coinsurance is fully covered.
  • If you visit the ER without admission, you may pay up to $50.
  • If you are hospitalized, Plan N covers the entire Part A deductible and all coinsurance costs.

Plan N vs. Other Medigap Plans

  • Plan G: Covers everything Plan N does, plus Part B excess charges. Premiums are usually higher.
  • Plan F: Covers everything including the Part B deductible, but is closed to new beneficiaries after 2020.
  • Plan D: Similar to Plan N but does not require the office/ER copays.

Average Costs for Plan N

In 2025, the average monthly premium for Medigap Plan N was $127.83 — about $1,534 annually. That’s lower than the overall Medigap average of $151.58, making Plan N one of the more affordable choices. Actual premiums vary by age, gender, smoking status, pricing model, and location.

How Common Is Plan N?

Plan N is widely available and growing in popularity. About 67% of insurers offer it, and around 10% of all Medigap enrollees choose Plan N. It has been available since 2010 and continues to attract new beneficiaries looking for a cost-effective balance of coverage and premiums.

When to Enroll

The best time to enroll in Plan N is during your Medigap Open Enrollment Period. This 6-month window begins when you turn 65 and are enrolled in Medicare Part B. During this period, insurers cannot deny coverage or charge more because of your health.

Outside this window, you may face medical underwriting unless you qualify for a guaranteed issue right.
