What Does Medigap Insurance Cover?

Medigap insurance can cover various expenses, including Medicare deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance. What Medigap Plans Cover in 2025

Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) helps pay for costs Original Medicare doesn’t cover, such as coinsurance, copayments, deductibles, and excess charges. In most states, there are 10 standardized Medigap plans (A–N), each offering different combinations of these benefits.

Potential Savings with Medigap Coverage

The nine areas of benefits Medigap plans may cover include:

  • Medicare Part A coinsurance & hospital costs: Up to $419 per day (days 61–90) and $838 per day (day 91+) in 2025.
  • Medicare Part B coinsurance/copayments: Typically 20% of service and product costs.
  • First 3 pints of blood: Up to $150 per pint.
  • Part A hospice care coinsurance/copayments: Up to $5 per prescription and 5% of inpatient respite care.
  • Part A deductible: $1,676 per benefit period in 2025.
  • Part B deductible: $240 per year in 2025 (covered only by Plan F and Plan C, not available to new enrollees).
  • Part B excess charges: Up to 15% above the Medicare-approved amount.
  • Skilled nursing facility coinsurance: Up to $209.50 per day (days 21–100).
  • Emergency care outside the U.S.: 80% of eligible costs under select plans.

All 10 Medigap plans cover at least some portion of the first four benefits listed above. The remaining benefits vary depending on the plan letter you choose.

Standardization and State Differences

Medigap plans are standardized nationwide—meaning Plan G offers the same benefits no matter which insurer you buy from. However, Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Wisconsin standardize their Medigap plans differently.

Eligibility and Enrollment

To buy a Medigap policy, you must be at least 65 and enrolled in Medicare Part B. The best time to enroll is during your six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period, which starts when you’re both 65 and signed up for Part B.

During this window, insurers cannot deny coverage or charge you more due to health conditions. If you apply later, you may face higher premiums or even be denied coverage after medical underwriting.

Important Enrollment Rule

You cannot have both a Medicare Advantage plan (Part C) and a Medigap plan at the same time. Enrolling in Medigap will automatically switch you back to Original Medicare.
