Pricing Models Used by Insurers

Insurers use three models to set Medigap premiums:

  • Community-rated: Everyone pays the same rate, regardless of age.
  • Issue-age-rated: Premium based on age when you enroll. Younger applicants lock in lower starting rates.
  • Attained-age-rated: Premium based on your current age and rises gradually each year.

Premiums may also increase due to inflation or company adjustments, no matter the model.

  • When you enroll (open enrollment vs. guaranteed-issue rights)

Why Enrollment Timing Matters

Enroll during your Medigap Open Enrollment Period. This 6-month window begins when you turn 65 and are enrolled in Part B. During this time, insurers cannot deny you or raise premiums because of your health.

Outside of OEP, medical underwriting may apply, and poor health could mean higher rates or denial.
