Medigap plans (Medicare Supplement Insurance) help pay for the out-of-pocket costs that Original Medicare does not cover. These costs include deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance. Each Medigap plan is standardized by the federal government, meaning benefits are the same no matter which company sells the policy.
How Medigap Plans Work
There are 10 standardized Medigap plan types, labeled A through N (excluding E, H, I, and J which are no longer sold to new enrollees). Each plan provides a different combination of benefits, letting you choose the level of coverage that best fits your needs and budget.
While the benefits of each plan type are standardized, premiums can vary by state and insurer. That’s why comparing options is so important.
